Sarah Byrns Rickman uses this volume to share more insight into the experimental Women's Air Service Pilot program and its ultimate downfall. WASP of the Ferry Command: Women Pilots, Uncommon Deeds peels back the too-often sugarcoated story of these courageous women and their struggles to be recognized as useful, much less equal.

Even more importantly Ms.

Rickman shows that this wasn't JUST a battle between two strong women, but one between two different commands of the Army Air Force that often had conflicting needs. Rickman does an excellent job of dealing with a complex historical situation, shedding light on multiple personalities and situations within the WASP program, as well as sharing anecdotes that were skimmed over in other volumes.

While the author often feels like she lands on the side of Nancy Love and the Ferrying Command over Jackie Cochran's training program, she does attempt to maintain a neutral ground as she pieces together the two programs. What this book isn't, though, is a collection of individual stand-alone stories. If you're not familiar with the WASP program and at least some of the women, this book could be a challenging read, especially if you also aren't familiar with wartime military and aviation terminology.

October 3, - Published on Amazon. Amazing chronicle of women volunteers in World War II who ferried combat aircraft across the United States on the way to war. There are a collection of stories from women pilots, and lists of the women who where in the different classes. The story bogs down a bit due to the lists of names and multiple stories. I did enjoy the book, but skipped some of it.

William H. Tunner lacked sufficient male pilots to move vital trainer aircraft from the factory to the training fields. Nancy Love found 28 experienced women pilots who could do the job. They, along with graduates of the Army's flight training school for women--established by Jacqueline Cochran--performed this duty until fall , when manufacture of trainers ceased.

In December the women ferry pilots went back to school to learn to fly high-performance WWII fighters, known as pursuits. By January they began delivering high performance Ps, 47s, and 39s.

Ferry Pilots

Prior to D-Day and beyond, Ps were crucial to the air war over Germany. They had the range to escort Bs and Bs from England to Berlin and back on bombing raids that ultimately brought down the German Reich. Getting those pursuits to the docks in New Jersey for shipment abroad became these women's primary job. Ultimately, more than one hundred WASP pursuit pilots were engaged in this vital movement of aircraft. Table of Contents.
